18-360: Deliberate Design: Mobility Technology

Units:

12

Description:

Each designed product, solution, or system carries an intention against which its result can be measured. The effectiveness of mobility tech in achieving universal design--design for all kinds of body and mind--and enabling access to public services and goods depends on the rates of policy, technology, and market response. Are the beneficial or adverse outcomes we live with deliberately designed, or emergent? Can we develop precise system interventions that rebalance access across populations?

This project-based course explores how humans move through space and time, and welcomes solutions from across ECE. This includes using embedded systems, data loops, limited sensing kits, and physical feedback to navigate through low-energy, high-noise environments. The format is studio-style: lectures and exercises that lead into a longer primary project, with regular design feedback, iterative testing, and a refined final build. The class meets at the listed times, plus scheduled collaboration with a counterpart Arch course to record nontypical movement patterns.
