18-883B4: Special Topics in Energy Systems: Integrated Energy Systems

Units:

6

Description:

This course examines how power systems autonomously respond to disturbances. We will consider the analysis concepts, techniques and tools needed to deal with the short term and transient (seconds to microseconds) behavior of power systems as they maintain voltage and frequency within regulatory limits. Students will learn how different representations of power systems components capture and simplify their behavior, with limitations. They will learn how to interpret simulated power system waveforms, and they will study the modeling and operation of automatic controls for voltage and frequency. After completing this course, students will be able to direct the formation of dynamic models of the power system, and to critically evaluate the underlying assumptions and data to assess its fitness for studying a given phenomenon.

In Fall 2019 his course is broadcast to the CMU-Africa campus. ECE Pittsburgh students attend classes synchronously with students in Rwanda.
